The material presented in State Profiles uses combined data from a number of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) sources, including:
- Two Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) surveysthe National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS);
- SAMHSAs Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (SAPT) Federal Block Grant Application data;
- SAMHSAs Formula and Discretionary Grant Allotments Summary; and
- the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professions (BHP) Health Professional Shortage Area ratings.
Combining data from several sources should provide information that is more informative and relevant to program management than single-source data. However, each source has limitations. Due to these limitations, comparisons among States and over time should be made with caution. For additional information on each source, go to the Data Sources.
Material is organized into two sections: State Profiles and Maps and State Summaries.
